OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The Occupational Therapy Team at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital work with people of all abilities, helping them to carry out the activities (such as doing the shopping, getting dressed, cooking a meal) that they need or want to do in order to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. They aim is to enable everyone to be as independent as possible in their daily activities within the environments that they live, work and play.

The Occupational Therapy Team

The team are qualified to degree level and registered members of the Health Professions Council and British Association of Occupational Therapists As specialist occupational therapists they are trained to work in the field of neurological and spinal cord rehabilitation.

By assessing carefully each person’s needs, a programme of therapy is planned and implemented working very closely with team members from other disciplines within the hospital to ensure that their work is as effective as possible.

Occupational Therapy Services

The occupational therapists see all patients admitted to the International Spinal Rehabilitation Unit at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital. They also see patients on an out-patient basis by arrangement. The occupational therapy service operated between 8.00 am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

  • Assessment of current abilities in activities of daily living. This will include where necessary assessment of physical or motor skills as well as mental processing skills. Occasionally formal standardised assessments of abilities are undertaken.
  • To improve hand functions and prevent deformities through the provision of specialist splints, undertaking specific exercises to work on muscle strength and range of movement, sensory re education and to practice specific activities to improve hand function.
  • The team also offer Functional Electrical Stimulation through Oddstock Microstim of Bioness H200 systems.
    Provision of individual or group therapy
  • Involvement in the client goal setting process
  • Practising specific tasks to improve functional abilities
  • Teaching compensatory or alternative techniques to enable independence
  • Improving motor and mental processing function in order to improve independence
  • Assessment and prescription of adaptive equipment and home modifications
  • Liaison with appropriate agencies and companies for statutory provision or private purchase of recommended equipment.

SAEBO:


Saebo allows individuals suffering from neurological impairments such as stroke the ability to incorporate their hand functionally in therapy and at home by providing a dynamic splint for functional grasp and elbow movements. We have equipment available on-site for patients to practice a range of activities as part of their Saeboflex programme.

Smart-Nav head control system :

To operate computers for high level tetraplegics: The Smart-Nav projects a cone of infrared light invisible to the human eye. This illumination makes the user's reflective dot visible to a small infrared camera inside the Smart-Nav. The Smart-Nav follows the motion of the dot and instructs the computer to move the cursor accordingly in real time .

Other occupational therapy treatments carried out at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital include: Functional Re-education and Activities of daily living training Splinting and provision of assistive aids Equipment selection and trials Advice on home adaptations Patient Education Restoration and retraining of normal movements to upper limbs.
