Functional Neurological Disorder

At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we deliver consultant-led inpatient neurorehabilitation for adults with FND. Our approach combines clear education about the diagnosis with targeted physiotherapy, occupational therapy and neuropsychology to help the brain relearn automatic control and restore confidence.

What is Functional Neurological Disorder?

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) causes real, often disabling symptoms even though routine scans and tests can appear normal. People may experience problems with movement, sensation, speech, vision or episodes that resemble seizures. FND is a problem with how the brain controls the body, not with willpower or effort.

Common Symptoms We Help Manage

We support adults diagnosed with FND who are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Functional gait disorder: unsteady or variable walking, freezing, falls
  • Functional limb weakness or tremor
  • Functional sensory symptoms: numbness, altered sensation or pain
  • Functional seizures (non-epileptic attacks)
  • Functional speech or swallowing difficulties
  • Functional parkinsonism and other movement patterns
  • Post-illness or post-injury deconditioning, fatigue and reduced confidence

Many patients have overlapping conditions such as migraine, persistent pain, post-concussion syndrome, anxiety or low mood. Our team is experienced in supporting complex, mixed presentations.

Our Inpatient FND Programme

Goal-based, multidisciplinary rehabilitation delivered by a team that understands FND:

  • Neurophysiotherapy – movement retraining, graded exposure to feared movements, cueing for gait initiation and turning, balance and falls prevention, strength and stamina building.
  • Occupational Therapy – energy conservation and pacing, task-specific practice for self-care and meaningful activities, planning routines, environmental modifications and equipment.
  • Neuropsychology – education about FND, attention and movement-focus strategies, anxiety and avoidance reduction, mood and adjustment support, relapse-prevention planning.
  • Speech And Language Therapy (as needed) – functional voice and communication strategies; swallow screening and compensations if symptoms affect eating and drinking.
  • Medical Oversight – consultant review, medication rationalisation where appropriate, and co-ordination with your referring clinician.

What makes our approach different: we give a clear, compassionate explanation of FND, then build graded, success-focused practice so the nervous system relearns automatic control. We never suggest symptoms are “imagined”.
