What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral Palsy refers to a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain posture and balance. It is caused by abnormal development or damage to the parts of the brain that control movement, often occurring before, during, or shortly after birth.
While the condition is non-progressive (the brain injury does not worsen over time), its physical effects can change as the person grows or ages, requiring ongoing therapy and support.
STypes of Cerebral Palsy
- Mixed CP – A combination of the above symptoms
- Spastic CP – Characterised by muscle stiffness and tightness, the most common form
- Dyskinetic CP – Involves uncontrollable, slow movements
- Ataxic CP – Affects balance and coordination
Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy
Symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of the condition and may include:
- Muscle stiffness (spasticity) or floppiness
- Involuntary movements or tremors
- Poor coordination and balance
- Difficulty with walking or motor skills
- Delayed speech or communication challenges
- Swallowing or feeding difficulties
- Joint deformities or abnormal posture
These challenges can range from mild to severe and often require a tailored, multidisciplinary approach to care.
