Huntington’s Disease

Expert care, support, and rehabilitation for individuals and families affected by Huntington’s Disease.
What is Huntington’s Disease?
Huntington’s disease is a rare, inherited neurological disorder that progressively affects movement, cognitive function, and emotional wellbeing. Caused by a genetic mutation, symptoms typically appear between the ages of 30 and 50, though they can start earlier or later. It is a life-changing condition that requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care.
At the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we provide specialist neurological rehabilitation and support tailored to individuals living with Huntington’s Disease.
Symptoms of Huntington’s Disease
Symptoms tend to develop gradually and worsen over time. They may vary from person to person but commonly include:
Movement Difficulties:
- Involuntary jerking or writhing movements (chorea)
- Muscle rigidity and contracture
- Difficulty with balance, walking, or coordination
- Impaired speech and swallowing
Cognitive Changes:
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Memory loss or reduced mental processing speed
- Impaired judgment or organisational skills
Emotional and Behavioural Symptoms:
- Mood swings, irritability, or depression
- Anxiety or obsessive-compulsive tendencies
- Social withdrawal or personality changes
Diagnosis
A diagnosis is usually based on a combination of:
- Clinical evaluation of symptoms
- Family history
- Neurological exams
- Genetic testing, which can confirm the presence of the faulty gene
Early diagnosis allows for better planning and access to supportive therapies.
