Motor Neurone Disease

Specialist care and support for those living with progressive neurological conditions
What is Motor Neurone Disease?
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rare but serious neurological condition that progressively damages motor neurons – the nerve cells that control muscle movement. As these neurons deteriorate, the brain’s ability to send signals to the muscles is disrupted, leading to weakness, loss of mobility, and eventual paralysis.
There are several types of MND, including:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – the most common form
- Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP)
- Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA)
- Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)
Common Symptoms of MND
Symptoms often begin subtly and progress over time. These may include:
- Muscle weakness or stiffness (usually in the limbs or hands)
- Difficulty with speech or swallowing
- Muscle cramps and twitching
- Fatigue and reduced coordination
- Weight loss and breathing difficulties (in later stages)
- Emotional changes such as depression or anxiety
Early diagnosis is key to managing symptoms and planning supportive care.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing MND can be challenging as its symptoms overlap with other neurological conditions. At the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, diagnosis typically involves:
- Neurological examination
- Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies
- MRI scans to rule out other conditions
- Blood tests and spinal fluid analysis
We offer quick access to advanced diagnostics and consultations with specialist neurologists.
Treatment and Support
TWhile there is currently no cure for MND, tailored treatments and therapies can significantly improve comfort and prolong independence. Our services include:
- Rehabilitation therapy – physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech & language support
- Nutritional advice and PEG feeding support where required
- Respiratory care and non-invasive ventilation
- Emotional and psychological support for both patients and families
- Assistive technology to maintain communication and mobility
We also collaborate closely with national MND associations to ensure patients have access to the latest treatment advances and support networks.
