Persistent Indigestion
Persistent indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a common condition that causes discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen. While many cases are mild and self-limiting, persistent symptoms can sometimes indicate more serious digestive issues.
At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer private GP assessments, blood testing, and onsite endoscopy procedures to investigate the underlying cause of persistent indigestion and support early diagnosis and treatment.
What Does Indigestion Feel Like?
Symptoms vary between individuals but often include:
- Burning sensation or pain in the upper abdomen
- Bloating or feeling full quickly when eating
- Nausea or burping
- Acid reflux or regurgitation
- Discomfort after meals
- Appetite changes or early satiety
If symptoms occur regularly (more than 2–3 times per week) or interfere with daily life, further assessment is recommended.
Causes of Persistent Indigestion
Common causes include:
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
- Functional dyspepsia
- Hiatus hernia
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Peptic ulcers
- Gallbladder issues
- Food intolerances (e.g. lactose, gluten)
- Side effects of certain medications
- Stress or anxiety-related digestive disruption
Occasionally, indigestion may be an early sign of a more serious condition such as Barrett’s Oesophagus or stomach cancer, especially in patients over 55 or those with unexplained weight loss or anaemia.
When to Seek Medical Advice
You should speak to a doctor if you experience:
- Indigestion lasting longer than 3 weeks
- Difficulty swallowing or persistent nausea
- Unintentional weight loss
- Vomiting or vomiting blood
- Black or tarry stools
- Anaemia or fatigue
