Post‑Concussion Syndrome
Overview
Post‑Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is a condition where symptoms continue for weeks or months after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), such as a concussion. While most people recover within a few days or weeks, some experience longer-lasting cognitive, physical, and emotional symptoms that interfere with daily life.
At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we provide expert inpatient neurorehabilitation for adults with persistent post-concussion symptoms. Our multidisciplinary team helps individuals recover independence, confidence, and function.
What Is Post‑Concussion Syndrome?
Post‑Concussion Syndrome occurs when the brain takes longer than expected to recover after a mild injury. Even without visible damage on a scan, changes in brain function can lead to ongoing difficulties.
Common causes include:
- Falls or knocks to the head
- Road traffic accidents
- Sports injuries
- Assault or workplace incidents
PCS may be more likely in people with a history of anxiety, depression, or multiple concussions.
Symptoms of Post‑Concussion Syndrome
Symptoms can appear immediately or develop over several days and may persist for weeks or months. They typically include:
Cognitive symptoms
- Difficulty concentrating or thinking clearly
- Memory lapses
- Slowed thinking or reduced mental stamina
- Word-finding problems or brain fog
Physical symptoms
- Headaches
- Dizziness or balance issues
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Nausea or visual disturbances
- Sleep disruption or fatigue
Emotional and behavioural symptoms
- Irritability or mood swings
- Anxiety or low mood
- Reduced motivation or frustration
- Feeling overwhelmed or withdrawn
These symptoms can vary in intensity and may be affected by stress or activity levels.
How Is PCS Diagnosed?
PCS is a clinical diagnosis made based on symptom history and exclusion of other causes. Investigations may include:
- MRI or CT brain scan (usually normal in PCS)
- Neuropsychological testing
- Balance or vestibular assessments
- Review of mental health and emotional wellbeing
Early diagnosis and holistic rehabilitation can help improve outcomes and reduce the impact of persistent symptoms.
