Dr Riaz Dharamshi is a consultant geriatrician, clinical leader, and author with over 15 years of experience across acute, community, and system-wide healthcare. He is motivated by clinical excellence, personalised care, and the creation of effective team and organisational cultures.
He has held senior leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Clinical Director at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, where he oversaw physical and mental health services, quality improvement, and service transformation during the pandemic and recovery period. Previously, as Deputy Medical Director at Dorset Healthcare, he developed an integrated model of community care for older people, which was adopted as the preferred system approach across Dorset and recognised nationally.
Alongside leadership, Dr Dharamshi has maintained active clinical practice as a community geriatrician. He has a strong academic and publishing track record, speaks regularly at national events, and writes extensively about health, care, and aging.
Research & Teaching
Dr Riaz Dharamshi is a consultant geriatrician, clinical leader, and author with a strong track record in service transformation and integrated care for older people. He has combined senior leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Physical Health and Clinical Director at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, with ongoing clinical practice. His leadership has spanned quality improvement, frailty services, and large-scale organisational change, including the Southern Health–Solent Trust merger.
His academic and research interests centre on integrated community services, frailty, and health equality in old age. He has spoken at national conferences and published extensively, most recently his book Health Equality and Social Justice in Old Age: A Frontline Perspective (Jessica Kingsley Publishing, 2022). His work on integrated care in Dorset has been nationally recognised and adopted as a preferred model for community services.
As both a teacher and leader, Dr Dharamshi emphasises clinical excellence, personalisation of care, and the cultivation of effective team and organisational cultures, inspiring colleagues to deliver better outcomes for patients and communities.
