Liat’s journey began in Panama, where she founded the country’s first wheelchair basketball team in 1986, sparking her lifelong passion for spinal cord injury care. A British government scholarship in 1990 later brought her to the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where she specialised in spinal cord injuries. She went on to gain further expertise in hydrotherapy for neurological disorders at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in 1993, where she trained in the Bad Ragaz Ring Method, an advanced aquatic therapy technique.
With 40 years of experience as a physiotherapist, Liat believes that exceptional patient care should be the standard. Since 1993, she has been a Chartered Physiotherapist, driven by a deep commitment to improving patients’ quality of life. She works closely with a multidisciplinary team at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital to ensure the best possible outcomes.
In 1999, Liat was invited by Dr. Hans Frankel OBE MB FRCP, Director of the National Spinal Injuries Centre, and Dot Tussler MCSP, Head Physiotherapist of the Spinal Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, to represent the International Medical Society of Paraplegia at the South American Congress of Spinal Cord Injuries in Brazil. There, she delivered lectures to doctors, nurses, and therapists from around the world who work in specialised spinal injury units. This experience was a pivotal moment in her career, reinforcing her passion for teaching. Since then, she has continued to educate and mentor therapists both nationally and internationally. As a Senior Physiotherapist, she has dedicated part of her career to teaching spinal cord injury management from the acute phase through to full rehabilitation.
In 2021, Liat completed a medico-legal course for physiotherapists to complement her understanding of the complex legal landscape involving solicitors, expert witnesses, case managers, and patients. Since completing the course, she has gained extensive experience working with case managers and solicitors to deliver comprehensive rehabilitation packages tailored to individual client needs.
Liat trained as a professional ballet dancer in Panama for 15 years, an experience that deeply shaped the qualities she brings to her physiotherapy practice today. Her passion for movement informs her approach, which focuses on normal movement patterns and addressing muscle imbalances. Through this, she works to strengthen neural connections and promote neuroplasticity by opening and utilising different movement pathways.
Joining the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital has allowed Liat to continue her work with spinal cord injury patients and those with neurological disorders, further strengthening the hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence in rehabilitation.
