Abdominal Pain
Abdominal pain and bloating are common symptoms that can affect quality of life and signal a range of underlying conditions — from mild digestive disorders to more serious gastrointestinal diseases. At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer rapid access to Private GP consultations, diagnostic testing, and now onsite endoscopy procedures to help identify the cause and begin treatment quickly.
When to Seek Medical Advice
You should speak to a healthcare professional if you experience:
- Ongoing or recurring abdominal discomfort
- Visible or persistent bloating
- Sudden changes in bowel habits
- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
- Blood in your stool
- Abdominal pain that wakes you at night or worsens after eating
Common Causes of Abdominal Pain or Bloating
Some of the most frequent causes include:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Functional Dyspepsia
- Constipation or trapped wind
- Food intolerances (e.g. lactose or gluten)
- Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)
- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
- Coeliac Disease
- Gallstones or liver-related conditions
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Diverticular Disease
- Colorectal cancer or polyps
These conditions may present with similar symptoms, which is why early diagnostic investigation is important.
