Stroke

At the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we specialise in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients affected by stroke. A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Immediate medical attention is critical to limit damage and improve outcomes.
What Is a Stroke?
A stroke happens when the brain’s blood flow is disrupted—either by a blockage (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (haemorrhagic stroke). Brain cells begin to die within minutes, which can lead to long-term disability or death if not treated promptly.
Common Symptoms of Stroke
Recognising the early signs of a stroke can be life-saving. Use the FAST test as a guide:
- F – Face: One side of the face may drop or feel numb. The person may be unable to smile.
- A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm. They may be unable to lift both arms.
- S – Speech: Slurred or garbled speech, or difficulty understanding.
- T – Time: Time to call 999 immediately.
Other symptoms can include:
- Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision
- Severe headache with no known cause
- Dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination
- Confusion or memory problems
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately, even if they resolve quickly.
Causes and Risk Factors
The underlying causes of stroke vary, but the most common are:
1. Ischaemic Stroke
Occurs when a blood clot blocks a brain artery. Often linked to:
- High blood pressure
- Atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoking
2. Haemorrhagic Stroke
Occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Often related to:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Trauma or head injury
- Blood-thinning medications
3. Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA)
Also known as a “mini-stroke”, TIA symptoms are temporary but should never be ignored as they signal a high risk of future strokes.
When to Seek Emergency Care
If you suspect someone is having a stroke, seek emergency medical help immediately. Every minute counts when it comes to reducing brain damage and improving recovery chances.
